Some things are just better together. Take Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, for example. Separately they’re both funny guys, but together they’ve created some of the best laugh-out-loud films of our time.

Lemon and green tea are no different. Separately, they have both been shown to fuel weight loss, but together they fight fat and whittle middles even more effectively. To come to this finding, Purdue University researchers tested juices, creamers and other additives that are commonly mixed into teas by putting them through a model that simulates digestion. They found that citrus juice and vitamin C—which are both abundant in fresh lemons—increase catechin levels after digestion by a whopping 60 percent, likely thanks to their acidity, which have been shown to help catechins thrive.

Though the study only looked at lemon’s effect on green tea, the research team suspects that some of the results also could apply to black tea, which is great news for tea lovers looking to get a flat stomach.
